Nokia, Motorola in virtual tie for U.S. handset market
According
to figures from Telecom Trends International, Nokia and Motorola are
almost tied for the lead in the U.S. mobile phone market. Nokia claimed
26.5 percent of the U.S. market in 2002, down from 32 percent in 2001
and maintaining a very slim lead over Motorola. Meanwhile, Motorola
increased its share of the U.S. market to 26 percent in 2002, up from
20.8 percent in 2001. Samsung also expanded its portion of the U.S.
market, increasing its share to 11.8 percent, up from 9.3 percent in
2001. Kyocera also increased its share of the U.S. market to 10.5 percent
in 2002, up from 8.5 percent in 2001.

Jan. 15, 2003 12:46 PM EST, FALLS CHURCH, Va.Nokia Corp. managed
to hold a .5 percent lead over Motorola Inc. in the United States handset
market over the past year, according to numbers from Telecom Trends
International. Of the 72 million handsets sold in the United States
in 2002, Nokia scored a market share of 26.5 percent, while Motorola
had 26 percent. Nokias numbers dipped slightly from previous years
while Motorola managed to increase share, due to the success of its
v.60 series phones and the launch of its T720. Asian manufacturers Samsung,
Kyocera, and LG made inroads in the market, while Sony Ericsson and
Audiovox faced significant declines, according to the research company.
